Achieving excellence in environment, health and safety (EHS) performance across operations is ingrained in PPG’s culture and stated sustainability values. To help realize its sustainability vision, the company developed a number of environmental goals in 2012. PPG planned to report on the progress against these goals using 2012 as the baseline through 2020. The separation of PPG’s former Commodity Chemicals business in January 2013 significantly changed PPG’s environmental footprint.

Volunteers from PPG in China organized various "Earth Hour" events in Shanghai, Tianjin, Suzhou, Zhangjiagang, Wuhu, Kunshan, and Foshan encouraging employees to protect the environment. This is the third consecutive year PPG has organized and participated in activities relating to "Earth Hour," and this year drew the most participants to date.
"PPG has always been committed to environmental protection. On top of energy conservation, emissions reduction and promotion of green products, we have launched intensive education campaigns through various platforms both inside and outside the company,'' said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, corporate and government affairs, Asia Pacific. "In addition to our volunteers, more of our employees' families are taking part in environmental protection initiatives. Going forward, we will continue to advocate a green philosophy through diverse activities to promote green offices, green travel and green life on a larger scale."
In addition to observing the one-hour lights-off "Earth Hour" event, many PPG volunteer groups carried out activities under "The Blue Sky Project" theme. Volunteers in Wuhu, Zhangjiagang, Suzhou and Kunshan organized cycling activities and campaigns encouraging employees to ride bicycles, promoting a healthy, low-carbon and energy-saving way of life. Notably, volunteers in Wuhu traveled on urban public bicycles that day to encourage better use of public resources.
Volunteers from PPG Aerospace application support centers in Tianjin and Suzhou held tree-planting events, and the Tianjin and Songjiangplants launched energy-conservation and environmental-protection campaigns encouraging staff to use public transportation, grow plants, switch off unused appliances and avoid using disposable tableware. More than 20 employees from the Foshan plant and their families played badminton during the one-hour lights-off period.
PPG's China headquarters in Shanghai designated April as the "month of greenness" and organized programs throughout the month such as excursions, weekly energy-conservation tips and a "Green Moment" photography contest.
PPG Tianjin coatings plant recently held an "Eco Classroom" open day for "AICM 2013 open to public day and responsible care" Summer Camp. This is the third time the Tianjin plant has invited the public to visit the facility and find out more about what PPG does to support environmental protection. Nearly 60 visitors joined the event including students and teachers from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nankai University, Tianjin University as well as TEDA government officials, AICM officials and local company representatives.
PPG employees engaged in lively and enthusiastic discussions with visitors during the "Eco Classroom" event, and emphasized the importance of being a responsible corporate citizen and explained how PPG's main businesses, green products and innovative technologies help support environmental protection.
"Through this valuable community activity, we have an opportunity to share our achievements and successes in sustainable development with the public attending our Eco Classroom," said Shan Qi, manager of PPG's Tianjin plant. "We are pleased to have developed strong ties with the neighboring companies, such as CABOT and LG Chem, so we can bring the idea of 'Responsible Care' – which emphasizes the importance of safe, eco-friendly and healthy operations, as advocated by the global chemical industry – to a wider audience, engaging them in environmental protection."
As PPG's largest coatings production facility both in the Asia Pacific region and global, PPG's Tianjin plant earmarks funds for environmental protection initiatives every year since it opened in 1994, such as pollution prevention and reduction, reduced resource consumption, and waste recovery and disposal. In addition, the Tianjin plant has installed a VOC (volatile organic compound) monitoring system covering the entire factory area to help minimize its impact on the local air quality and environment.
As a member of the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM), PPG's Tianjin coatings plant participated in the "open-to-public day" program organized by the AICM in 2011, when it invited representatives from communities and schools in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) as well as media representatives to visit its facilities. The plant was awarded an honorary title by the TEDA Environmental Protection Association for its exemplary contribution to environmental protection and has been recognized as an "Excellent Environmental Protection Company" by the TEDA Environmental Protection Bureau for three consecutive years.
